on comfort foods.

Little food blog, I have not forgotten you. 2011 has just been off to a rough start.

So, when we last left our heroes, Jessica was wading through a sea of picture books and youth novels, plus, like, four jobs and a boyfriend and a roommate and a kitten. I had just returned from a trip to My Home and Native Land (not Canada, but close enough). Then I turned the big 2-6, which means I’m lookin’ down the business end of 30, which is surprisingly uncomfortable. Then my employment situation changed. And I’ve been sick since Christmas.

SO!

Things haven’t been at their most awesome. But there have been awesome times, too – visiting with friends (I made homemade mac ‘n’ cheese for seven), for example, and co-hosting Vegan Dinner Club with my friend Kate (theme: Cooking with booze).

Mostly I’ve been writing, laying on the couch and eating food that’s bad for me. If you didn’t know, DC is under a whole buttload (it’s metric) of snow, so there’s no trudging down the street for a churro or cupcake.

So I made a cake for one.

You’ll need:

4 tbsp flour

4 tsbp sugar

2 tbsp cocoa powder

Pinch baking powder

Pinch salt

Mix those guys in a mug or bowl (the mug needs to be a biggun).

Add one beaten egg. Mix.

Add 3 tbsp milk and 3 tbsp applesauce or oil. You can toss in a few drops of vanilla too. Mix.

Nuke for 2:30. Eat right away.

I like to eat it with a dollop of vanilla yogurt. You do what feels good. That’s the whole point.
